Warhammer 40,000 Tacticus: Preparing Perfection

In Warhammer 40,000 Tacticus, new Legendary Characters are unlocked through special monthly events whereby you have to defeat waves of enemies in progressively harder stages and to maximise the points you need to unlock the character, your teams have to meet a series of different criteria. For example all having a specific type of damage, a set number of hits or maybe all sharing a trait such as Rapid Assault. Each Legendary Character gets three such events and your scores carry over so there’s not just one bite of the cherry.

Perfection Personified is the particular event for Lucius The Eternal. The first one came round in August so the second will be due in December, or maybe January if there’s a new Legendary Character added in between. When the first one dropped I’d only just started playing Tacticus so was in no position to be able to unlock Lucius at that stage, but did my best to get as many points as possible to set me up for the next one.

So, it’s not just as simple as having a few strong characters to push you through to unlock these as those requirements I mentioned before mean you need to have a few options to call upon to have the best chance of progressing with all the points you need. So what are those requirements for Lucius:

  • Alpha Track (Chaos and Imperial Characters only)
    • Full Black Legion
    • Full Bolter Damage
    • Minimum of 4 Hits
    • Full Flying Trait
    • No Bolter Damage

  • Beta Track (Imperial and Xenos Characters Only)
    • Full Heavy Weapon Trait
    • Full Piercing Damage
    • Full Unstoppable Trait
    • Full Physical Damage
    • Maximum of 2 Hits

  • Gamma Track (Chaos and Xenos Characters Only)
    • Full Close-Combat Weakness Trait
    • Full Physical Damage
    • No Power Damage
    • Minimum of 5 Hits
    • Full Psychic Damage

As you have a limited number of tokens you ideally want characters and teams that can tick a couple of these requirements off in the same run to give you the best chance of unlocking and then ascending the character.

So currently I’m trying to work out a bit of a plan, based around a rough date in December when the Lucius event could be, to get my teams in a place to get as many points as possible. I’d love to unlock Lucius next time round but it’s probably a little bit out of my reach yet so, realistically, I’m probably setting things up for Part 3.

There are some obvious gaps in the plan as it stands.

  • No Abaddon means I can’t do the full 5 for the Black Legion track.
  • I’m light on the Flying Trait so Actus is making up the numbers rather than having any great synergy there.
  • Lucien, Bellator, Shiron, Adamatar and Angrax will do all of the carrying for their respective teams so they’re priorities for upgrades on the Alpha track.
  • The Beta track looks a smidge “bitty” and I have, at best, teams that might get one or two levels through overlapping tracks but feels like that’ll be a token drain!
  • Calandis will be doing a lot of heavy lifting with the Beta tracks and Lucien for the Unstoppable one so again a clear focus for upgrade priority.
  • If Beta looked “bitty” Gamma is just a horror – no overlap and in Close-Combat Weakness a track I can’t currently hit the minimum for – ideally I could unlock the Neurothrope and rush them through some upgrades for it as then it could bolster the Psychic track and open up Close-Combat Weakness.
  • I’m really not a massive Tau fan but I’m starting to come around to the fact that I might need to collect up some Tau and work on them to do well in this event!

I’m currently using the Tacticus Planner and the Tacticus Codex to help with my event planning and my Raiding plan – you can see a bit more about them in my Getting Started with Tacticus post.
