Warhammer 40,000 Tacticus: Preparing Perfection – The Lucius Plan

Some of this is an update of a previous post around preparing for the Lucius event but I thought I’d update it and add some detail in to a new post…

In Warhammer 40,000 Tacticus, new Legendary Characters are unlocked through special monthly events whereby you have to defeat waves of enemies in progressively harder stages and to maximise the points you need to unlock the character, your teams have to meet a series of different criteria. For example all having a specific type of damage, a set number of hits or maybe all sharing a trait such as Rapid Assault. Each Legendary Character gets three such events and your scores carry over so there’s not just one bite of the cherry.

Perfection Personified is the particular event for Lucius The Eternal. The first one came round in August so the second will be due in December, or maybe January if there’s a new Legendary Character added in between. When the first one dropped I’d only just started playing Tacticus so was in no position to be able to unlock Lucius at that stage, but did my best to get as many points as possible to set me up for the next one which starts 1st February.

So, it’s not just as simple as having a few strong characters to push you through to unlock these as those requirements I mentioned before mean you need to have a few options to call upon to have the best chance of progressing with all the points you need. So what are those requirements for Lucius:

  • Alpha Track (Chaos and Imperial Characters only)
    • Full Black Legion
    • Full Bolter Damage
    • Minimum of 4 Hits
    • Full Flying Trait
    • No Bolter Damage

  • Beta Track (Imperial and Xenos Characters Only)
    • Full Heavy Weapon Trait
    • Full Piercing Damage
    • Full Unstoppable Trait
    • Full Physical Damage
    • Maximum of 2 Hits

  • Gamma Track (Chaos and Xenos Characters Only)
    • Full Close-Combat Weakness Trait
    • Full Physical Damage
    • No Power Damage
    • Minimum of 5 Hits
    • Full Psychic Damage

As you have a limited number of tokens you ideally want characters and teams that can tick a couple of these requirements off in the same run to give you the best chance of unlocking and then ascending the character.

The below tables show the teams I’m looking at for the Lucius Plan. You’ll notice there’s often a few teams that hit some of the same criteria, often this will be in the interest of that token economy

Alpha Teams

Black Legion, No Bolter, and Min 4 Hits

Angrax, Volk, and Haarken

Black Legion and No Bolter

Angrax, Volk, Haarken, and Archimatos

No Bolter

Adamatar, Shiron, Hascule, Angrax, and Rotbone

Bolter

Bellator, Lucien, Isabella, Certus, and Brother Burchard

Flying

Bellator, Haarken, Yazaghor, Mataneo, and Actus

Min 4 Hits

Shiron, Bellator, Angrax, Volk, and Rotbone

In an ideal world I’d have Abaddon to be able to stretch the Black Legion requirement a little further. Also my Flying team and Bolter teams could be better and have a little more synergy but I’m working with what is either strong enough to slot in or what was available when I started farming the upgrades to get the teams where I needed them to be.

Beta Teams

Heavy Weapons, Physical, and Max 2 Hits

Calandis, Certus, and Sarquael

Heavy Weapons and Physical

Calandis, Certus, Sarquael, Vindicta, and Sy-Gex

Heavy Weapons

Calandis, Maugan Ra, Sarquael, Vindicta, and Sy-Gex

Unstoppable

Lucien, Marshal Dreir, Njal, Ulf, and Tanksmasha

Max 2 Hits

Calandis, Eldryon, Incisus, Mataneo, and Sarquael

Piercing

Calandis, Eldryon, Incisus, Kariyan, and Aethana

I have some doubts over the various Heavy Weapons teams, but that’s more about the nature of these wave-style modes and the number of enemies that can end up on the map with you and teams made up of characters who prefer to be at a distance could present some challenges but otherwise, feeling as good as I can about these teams. With no Chaos characters in the Beta track, there are no Emperor’s Children marines to carry through my other weaker characters but Calandis, Eldryon, Kariyan, Marshal Dreir, Maugan Ra and Lucien in particular are amongst my strongest characters so hopefully they can secure enough points here.

Gamma Teams

No Power and Min 5 Hits

Shiron, Aleph-Null, Re’vas, Imospekh, and Winged Prime

No Power

Shiron, Aleph-Null, Re’vas, Adamatar, and Hascule

Psychic

Abraxas, Eldyron, Archimatos, Yazaghor, and Xybia

Physical

Calandis, Yazaghor, Snotflogga, Gibbascrapz, Makhotep

Ranged Specialists

Re’vas, Sho’syl, and Darkstrider

Min 5 Hits

Shiron, Aleph-Null, Re’vas, Volk, and Maugan Ra

In theory these teams are ok… but they’re all pretty awful on this track I think. The Ranged Specialists one is an obvious area of weakness both from the lack of numbers for choice there from the characters that I have and from the inherent issues of the trait in this game format.

All of these characters will be at least Silver 1, many at Gold 1 and obviously, as my favourites, the Emperor’s Children will all be at least Diamond 1. I’ll review the plan a little nearer the start of the event to see if there were any changes and to reflect the level that each of the characters has gotten to. I’ll also do another review to see what changes and upgrades I’m aiming for, ahead of the third event.

I’m currently using the Tacticus Planner and the Tacticus Codex to help with my event planning and my Raiding plan – you can see a bit more about them in my Getting Started with Tacticus post.
